Rachel Carson Died of Breast Cancer
CICK TO READ “RACHEL CARSON DIED OF BREAST CANCER”.
Joni Seager opens up by explaining that “Feminist Environmentalism is shifting paradigms in public health, political economy, philosophy, science and ecology.” Then Seager explains the meaning and the affects of ecofeminism. Ecofeminism is a philosophical and political movement that combines both ecological and and feminist concerns all due to the fact of males dominating society. Eco-focused feminism, for a lot of women, was emerging in the 1980s. The whole idea behind this was to essentially rehabilitate the earth. However, not everyone accepted this idea. Women, particularly with a background in biological or social science, typically rejected this idea. In the 1960s many women health activists “forged sophisticated transnational coalitions to draw attention to the health needs and threats specific to their gender. However, drawing attention to one issue will inevitably lead to drawing attention to other issues such as, patriarchal, economic, and social structures that also were to pose dangers to women’s health and that would keep women’s health from being taken seriously. In the 1970s and 1980s there was a lot of public awareness of the “impact of environmental deterioration on human health.” The most recognizable environmental deteriorations being Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. There was also the discovery of the o-zone hole and the chemical disasters in Seveso and Bhopal. Rachel Carson was very important because she was a top tier advocate and suggested that this chemical fog was carcinogenic. Seager believes Carson was very influential and important because, “Carson pointed the way to the key paths of inquiry for contemporary feminist environmental public health interventions, the importance of persistence in accumulating evidence carcinogenic linkages.” Seager says that Carson believed in fighting against cancer at the casual level. Unfortunately, Rachel Carson died of breast cancer. However, Carson changed the world, her legacy is what made these women keep on trying and being persistent.
After reading Seager’s essay it really opened my eyes to a lot. These groups are going through a lot to just try and make the world better. It should not just be these “groups”. There should not have to be groups for making the world a better place, it should be society that does it. Unfortunately this is not a perfect world/utopia. Seager explains that “the radical movement has propelled women’s breast cancer movement far beyond the “pink ribbon” phase. Most people know someone who has been afflicted and/or affected by breast cancer. It is a great thing to keep spreading the awareness of not just the cancer itself but of the causes of it too, especially the environmental ones. I think it is incredible that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it is incredible to see everyone supporting the awareness. In my soccer games, for that month, I would wear a pink headband to honor all who lost the battle, all who are fighting the battle, and all who have been affected by the battle. These groups have come together to fight for women’s health and for the earth’s health, both of these things should be society’s responsibility, not just these groups.
